Insulin Part 1
Chris did a very dumb thing today. I am very upset. Humalog is fast acting insulin. You take it before you eat - to counteract however much sugar is in the food you're consuming. For him - for every 1 unit, it drops his sugar by 50 points. In the morning, he regularly takes 5 units (250 points) before he heads out to get his coffee & donut (or 2). At the same time, he also injects 40 units of Lantus, which is a 24 hour insulin that keeps your level even throughout the day.
So, he took his Lantus. Then with another needle (must be done separately), he drew up 40 units of Humalog. Without thinking. He pushed it in and he got to about 5 units left in the syringe, and he realized "what the hell am I doing?" and pulled it out as quick as he could. Yes, 35 units of Humalog. That would drop approx. 1750 points of sugar. A normal person has between 80 and 100 points. Holy shit. So he freaked out and went down to the coffee show and got a huge apple turnover. Huge. Before he ate, he tested his sugar. It was 68. He ate in the car on his way to his parents' house (10 minutes away) and it had dropped to 40 something. So he started to guzzle orange juice (very fast digesting sugar) and tested again. 28. He said he was feeling like shit, his heart was slowing down, thud ........... thud ....... thud ...... and he felt
nauseous and awful. His sugar started climbing back up, he told me that was around 60. He's got to keep checking, because he took so much Humalog, that he has to keep the sugar intake ahead of the insulin.
Severe hypoglycemia. He was ready to call an ambulance, it was that bad. Got close to a diabetic coma, that asshole. He scares me so much. Organs can shut down. I just want to scream.
Luckily, he already has an appointment this afternoon with the Diabetic Specialist. How insane is that? He's going to ask her for a prescription for a shot that packs a shit load of sugar. Perfect for these kinds of situations.
