Insulin Part 2

Chris is doing better. It was just a rough day. After the last time post, his sugar was at 120. Less than 1/2 hour later, it was 78. He told me he was heading back home from his parents' house to get ready for his 2:00 appt. Well, I talked to him after I got back from training, and he had gotten out of his appt. He told me that when he got home at 1:00, he used one of the emergency glucose tubes that the nutritionist had given him last week. He had always thought they were stupid and that they wouldn't do very much in this kind of situation. The whole tube is only 15 grams of sugar. Well, he tried it anyway, and it work stupendously! It's such a fast acting sugar that quickly gets into your system. I guess that's really what has straightened him out.

He talked to his doctor about this morning, and she told him that it happens. She's had lots of patients do that. It's not good, but sometimes it's hard to avoid. Chris is thinking of dividing his needles up into Humalog needles and Lantus needles. The Humalog needles will be marked with a piece of tape, like masking tape, that marks off 5 units. The Lantus needles will be left alone. That way, when he's drawing up, he'll have a visual reminder.

I just got off the phone with Chris, again. He said he's feeling so great now. All better. But he minimizes everything when he's experiencing something or there's a situation that he knows I'll freak out about. It's his way of telling me without telling me until it's over and done with. Little lies to cushion me. He told me (now) that he was much worse than he originally told me. He was losing vision, everything was spinning. I'm interpreting that as "being on the edge" of that coma.

But, here's some more news, his Diabetic Specialist is going to be doing a shit load of tests on him. She said that the way he presents just doesn't make sense in the Type 1 category. She told him not to get his hopes up, that there's only a slim chance, but he may not really be Type 1 at all. I guess there's something that's basically Type 1 and a half. Sometimes the pancreas does what it's supposed to, which is digest sugar, and sometimes it doesn't. And that's why he fluctuates so much. I have no idea, and she told him not to put much thought into it yet. But he may be able to go off of shots in the future, and just take pills. Maybe.

So his pancreas is definitely not functioning properly, but it may be functioning in a some way.

All I know is, I want to stock up on those Glucose 15 tubes. I want to find a place that sells them in bulk!
