My Cape Cod Trip
We left Westminster at 6:30. Deb, Steve & Ethan were in their truck, and we were in the Subaru. We used those cool Motorola 2-way radios to keep in contact the whole way - which was really neat!
The truck was supposed to be following us, and Chris told them to keep up with us - but he had to drive 90-100 mph the whole way. What a rebel! We got to the cape in about 2 hours because there was no traffic. We could tell the difference in air temperature & humidity the closer we got to the Cape. We were leaving the high 80s with high humidity and entering the low 70s with hardly any humidity! It was wonderful! Matter of fact, Chris wore shorts for the drive down, and when we stopped at the gas station just before going over the bridge to the Cape, he was freezing cold while pumping gas! So he dug out his jeans and changed in the bathroom.
We met up with Laura & Matt at Dunkin's in Dennis. Matt's family has a small cottage in Dennis, and that's where Deb, Steve & Ethan would be staying. We had dinner at D'Angelos (a sub shop) and then Chris & I headed off to Dennis Port where our hotel was. We checked in and were settled by 9:00. The hotel room wasn't bad at all. We brought our own pillows because hotel pillows are much too flat and uncomfortable! The only thing that I really didn't like about the hotel room was the shower. It wasn't gross or anything, but the water was so slow at draining! By the end of my shower the water was up to my ankles!
Even though we were both exhausted, it was very hard to fall asleep. Unfamiliar bed and an unfamiliar place. Chris said I rolled around a lot. We got up at 6:30 to get ready, meet up with everyone for breakfast and then head to the beach for some fishing. We had a wonderful breakfast at Sandi's Diner in Chatham. Chris and I had gone there for a breakfast lunch a couple weeks ago, and we really wanted everyone else to experience it. After breakfast we headed to Morris Island. 72 steps down to get to the beach. It was so windy and Chris couldn't fly fish. So with three pole, Chris, Steve & Ethan started surf casting.
After a couple hours (and no hits) we packed it up and headed back up the 72 steps (with my concrete legs). We went to the center of Chatham and had lunch at a pizza shop. A couple stores down had some Cape shirts and one of them said something like "I have 2 favorite baseball teams. The Red Sox and who ever beats the Yankees." So I had to buy it!
Deb, Steve, Ethan, Chris & I then headed off to the Zooquarium. Laura & Matt headed back to the cottage. On the way to Hyannis it dawned on Chris that he left his wading boots at the beach on the rocks. That ruined his day! So we stopped at an Outfitters store and then had nothing, that store called another store, and they had nothing. Chris got more depressed and we gave up for the time being. Off to the Zooquarium.
When we arrived, we had just missed the beginning of the Seal Show. So we missed the Seal kissing a couple lucky kids. I tried to take a bunch of pictures of the Seal doing his tricks, but he was moving so fast and my camera just couldn't keep up with him! After the show, we walked around the aquarium part where they had a lot of turtles and fish. Then we went outside into the Zoo part where I fell in love!
I was especially enthralled with the Pygmy Goat Kids! And I took a ton of photos of them. I couldn't get enough! I miss having goats. And I think if I ever have goats again, some will be pygmies for sure.
After leaving the Zooquarium, we decided to split up. Ethan wanted to ride go-carts and Chris and I wanted to search around some more for the wading boots. No luck, while driving all over the place - so we went back to the hotel for a nap. We really needed a nap!
We met back up with Deb, Steve & Ethan at Dunkin Donuts near where they were staying so that we could head out to Nauset for the sunset. Laura & Matt were going to come with us, but Deb said that Laura was feeling a lot of pain in her lower belly and the bottom sides of her belly. She called her doctor back in Westminster and he told her to go to the hospital. It was either pain from the belly stretching or she was having contractions, which would not good at 6 months. So I ripped out a page from our Cape Cod Atlas with directions to the Hyannis Hospital and off they went while the rest of us went on to Nauset.
While we were at Nauset, Deb got a call from Matt saying that everything was alright, that it was just the ligaments stretching. They did a lot of cool ultrasound type of tests (better quality than back home) and they told Laura & Matt that the baby is very mature for how far along she is. Laura's a small girl, and we're all teasing her that she's going to have a 12 lb baby!
On the way back from Nauset, we stopped at the go-cart place and the 5 of us each got a car. Chris won the race, I lapped Deb 3x, Ethan 2x and I almost had Steve for a 2nd time but the race had ended. It was a ton of fun, hugging those turns with the pedal to the metal! Chris & I headed back to the hotel, because it was already 10:00, but I really wanted some ice cream. There happened to be an ice cream stand on the property of Holiday Hill, so after dropping our stuff off at the room, we walked down and I got a snickers ice cream on a cone! Yeah, I loved it.
We got up at 7:00 and packed everything so that we could check-out on our way out for the day. Chris & I headed up to an Orvis store (fishing outfitter) but they didn't have the boots, either. We did get a pair of sunblocking gloves though, because Chris' spots burn so bad on his hands - and it's hard to keep sunblock lotion on your hands. This will do the trick. Now I just need to get a complete suit for him!!!
Again, we met up with the rest of the family for breakfast at a different place and then headed out to find some more fishing spots. Unfortunately, the 2 other spots we wanted to try were either 1) no fish or 2) packed. So we decided to just head back to Morris Island since we were familiar with it and it would definitely not be packed. It was much hazier than on Saturday, and we didn't go down as far along the beach. The guys were fishing with sea eels this time, since the mackerels didn't seem to be working. Chris also got the kite out and Ethan was playing with it - until the Ranger came down those 72 steps and told Ethan he'd have to pull it in. It scares the birds who think it's a predator bird - and this was a bird sanctuary/reserve. He was very nice about it, though.
I don't know if it was from carrying stuff, going up and down 72 steps, or what, but my spasms started coming back and it really pissed me off. If it happens again before Wednesday (when I have to call the neuro for a phone check-up), then he will probably increase me back up to 3x a day instead of 2x a day. I was really hoping that on Wednesday he'd tell me to go down to 1x a day, but now I think I'm not ready for that yet.
Ethan wanted to hit the Bumper Boats on the way - since we were ready to leave the Cape. Well, it turned out that the Bumper Boats have squirt guns, and no one wanted to get wet like that. Fortunately, they also had batting cages behind the boats. One round for all of us turned out to be too addicting, so we ended up staying there for an hour or so. Round after round! Matter of fact, my shoulders are sore today and that's from swinging the bat.
Even though we had no traffic coming down, we hit it all on the way home. But once the traffic loosened up, Chris really stepped on it - supposedly. I don't know, because I had passed out. He told me that he went around 110 mph for most of the ride - and I slept right through it like a baby. People were getting out of his way very fast, and then they would slide right in behind him and cruise almost just as fast.
Well, we got home in one piece, and that's all that matters. We had a blast!
