Ropinerol & RLS Study

Last week I heard an ad on the News Radio station that I listen to. It was for a clinical trial for people with Restless Leg Syndrome. I called them up on Friday to ask for information on it. I got the call back just now and it's for Ropinerol which is FDA approved for Parkinson's Disease, but they are now testing it for RLS. The fact that it already has approval for something makes me feel much more comfortable about the whole thing. The lady I spoke to is going to find out if MS is an exclusionary factor for me and she said that she'll call me back. You know, why bother sign up and go for the screening if I'd be excluded from the get-go for having MS.

Anyway, she gave me the basic info. It'd be 18-20 weeks long. 8 visits total. The first visit is the screening, physical exam and reviewing the risks of taking the medication (2 hrs). The 2nd visit is the actual 1st dosing (real or placebo) and you have to stay there for 4 hours for them to monitor you. The next dose is 3 weeks later, but you only have to stay for 2 hours. The schedule pretty much stays the same from then on. They pay you $60 for each visit, and if you take the train there, they will pay for the taxi ride from the station to the hospital. The hospital is in Newton, which is about an hour or so away from me.

I'm really thinking about doing this. I want to be able to contribute ... but clinical trials for the most part are scary. This one, however, meets "my criteria". It sure sounds a lot safer than something brand new and never tested on anything but animals! Which is awful in and of itself!!!!
