We did it!

And I'm so damn happy!

We went to Gerry's after I got out of work. It's a bit of a drive, but it's not a bad drive. She lives in a very nice senior housing condominium community. Her digs are very big - as far as condos that I know of go! She is a very young "senior" though, maybe in her 60's somewhere. And she is such a sweetheart! Very kind, and obviously a very loving person. I'm glad she's the one who's handfeeding our baby!

She had 4 green babies in this plastic tub/container, and she put it on the dining room table for us to sit around. She spread out newspaper and papertowels and lifted each one out for us to see. Two were already sold, and we looked at the bands to pick out the 2 who were taken and the 2 who were available. The two who were spoken for were put back into the tub. Then Chris and I got to start holding and scratching the two that were on the paper.

I was kind of nervous about picking one up and holding it because I didn't know how fragile - or how UNfragile they are. And they were much bigger than I had imagined. They're only a little over a month old! They had lots of feathers growing in, although there were still bare spots, and lots of short prickles. They looked like they had spikey hair! Gerry showed us how they loved to be scratched and rubbed behind their necks, and then Chris and I started to do it. We noticed that one of the babies did not shy away and was so relaxed. The other one would kind of shy away a little, but once you started rubbing it would relax. I didn't say anything, but Chris said that the one that was not shy was the one he wanted. I'm so glad he piped up because that's the one I was eyeing! Band #11.

Gerry talked to us a lot about Quaker's likes and dislikes. How she feeds them and what she does with the babies, too. They haven't begun to learn "step-up" but that will be coming shortly. She said that she works with them on that so that when they are weaned and ready to go, they are very familiar with doing that. She also lets them fledge for about a week or so before clipping, which is what I would have requested if that wasn't her practice. They're already starting to eat a little pellet and she has introduced vegetables, which they basically just play with and tongue right now.

Yup, we're hooked! I gave her $100 for the deposit and we'll be able to see Mia again when Gerry gets back from the Cape later next week. She told us to bring a camera, which we didn't do tonight.

Oh, and Mia was born on June 3rd.
